Lawyer charged with forgery

SINGAPORE- The former chairman of the Law Society of Singapore's Criminal Legal Aid Scheme (Clas) committee was charged yesterday with six counts of forgery.
Clas is an initiative that provides free legal assistance to the needy.
Lawyer Gopinath B Pillai (right), 43, is accused of forging court documents purporting to be records of the High Court.
The documents, which included four orders of court and a notice of appeal, were related to a civil case involving one Mr Eddie Lo Kuen Cheung and a company known as Golden Sky International Holdings Limited.
Mr Pillai, who stopped practising in August last year, allegedly committed the offence between September 2012 and last April.
He is represented by lawyer Abraham Vergis and the pre-trial conference will be held on Feb 5.
If convicted of the offence, he can be jailed up to 10 years and fined for each charge.
