Lianhe Zaobao holds 90th anniversary bash

SINGAPORE - Chinese daily Lianhe Zaobao marked its 90th anniversary on Friday with an evening of art and music at Fort Canning.

More than 3,000 people turned up for the occasion, including Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean (above), who gamely joined the newspaper's senior editors and members of the public atop an installation sculpture.

The sculpture, called One Cubic Singapore, was specially created for the event by local visual artist Yeo Chee Kiong. It is designed to look like the Chinese character for "new", which represents Singapore's as well as Zaobao's constant renewal and drive to remain relevant.

Dubbed Nine Songs, Zaobao's two-day event features 40 local artists, whose performances include Beijing opera, humorous cross-talk and band covers of local oldies. The event continues on Saturday night from 7.30pm to 10pm, and admission is free.
