Liquor law passed: Late night public drinking will be illegal

SINGAPORE - A new liquor law restricting late night public consumption of alcohol has been passed in Parliament on Friday, after a three-hour debate.
The Liquor Control (Supply and Consumption) Bill is expected to take effect from April 1, from which it will be illegal to drink in public places, including void decks, parks and on the streets from 10.30pm and 7am.
Retail sale of alcohol from 10.30pm will also be banned, and Little India and Geylang will be designated as Liquor Control Zones.
According to reports, almost all 17 MPs who debated the Bill supported it. However, they called for more flexibility in the law.
In his speech, Second Minister for Home Affairs S Iswaran said residents in many areas want a more peaceful and orderly living environment, especially at night, and even on weekends.
"The proposed Bill will help mitigate the risks to public order and reduce disamenities associated with public drunkenness.
"It will bring much needed respite to many residents, and create a safer neighbourhood for all," said Mr Iswaran.
