Little India infrastructure needs improving

One of the key issues missing from the Committee of Inquiry's report on the Little India riot appears to be infrastructure to handle the weekend crowd ("3 key factors in Little India riot: COI report"; last Tuesday).

The area between Race Course Road and Jalan Besar is congested, with narrow roads and a high density of shops and restaurants that spill onto walkways.

This makes management of human and vehicular traffic on Sundays a nightmare.

There is no breathing space for the increasing number of foreign workers who gather there for shopping, dinner and drinks.

Crowd management is thus extremely difficult, especially when the crowd grew unruly last year.

The overflow of people onto the roads also makes it dangerous for pedestrians and motorists.

The authorities will need to look into the future plan of the entire Little India area in great detail - this includes its roads, shopping area and layout, footpaths, vehicular traffic movement and other amenities.
