Local label snags top prize

Singapore - Local label Ong Shunmugam has beaten more than 900 others from 19 countries to win the Grand Award at the Design For Asia Awards 2013.

The award is given by the Hong Kong Design Centre to companies who help to increase the quality and vibrancy of life in Asia using design.

Entries are judged based on creativity, style, aesthetics, functionality, eco-friendly aspects, commercial success and international design trends.

Designer Priscilla Shunmugam, who is behind the three-year-old label (left), is known for her modern take on traditional Asian apparel such as the cheongsam.

The Malaysia-born Singapore permanent resident also incorporates textiles from South-east Asia to support the industries in the region.

Past winners of the Grand Award include bakery Bread Talk, Gardens By The Bay, Shigeru Ban Architects and Chinese luxury label Shang Xia.
