LTA awards contracts for Tanjong Rhu, Katong Park and Marine Terrace stations

SINGAPORE - The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded three contracts for the construction of Tanjong Rhu, Katong Park and Marine Terrace MRT stations along Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) with a total value of approximately $948 million.

All the companies contracted have had experience with MRT station construction, LTA said today.

The construction of Tanjong Rhu station and its associated tunnels has been awarded to a joint venture between geotechnical and civil engineering firm Bachy Soletanche Singapore and Wai Fong Construction at a sum of approximately $294 million.

Wai Fong Construction is currently involved in the construction of TEL's Mount Pleasant Station, while Bachy Soletanche is currently involved in the construction of the Orchard and Gardens By The Bay stations along the TEL. The French firm was also previously involved in the construction of Bugis and Telok Ayer stations along Downtown Line 1 (DTL1).

The construction of Katong Park station and its associated tunnels has been awarded to Shanghai Tunnel Engineering (Singapore) at a contract sum of $293 million. The firm is also involved in the construction of Tuas West Extension, TEL's Shenton Way station and the tunneling portion between Woodlands Station and Woodlands Avenue 12. It was previously involved in the construction of Promenade station on DTL1 and Newton station on Downtown Line 2 (DTL2).

Marine Terrace station and its associated tunnels will be built by a joint venture between Ssangyong Engineering & Construction and Hyundai Engineering & Construction at a contract sum of $361 million.

Ssangyong was previously involved in the construction of DTL2's Rochor and Little India stations, while Hyundai is currently involved in the construction of MacPherson station on Downtown Line 3, as well as several North East Line (NEL) stations and the NEL depot.

Together with Marine Parade station, the Tanjong Rhu and Marine Terrace stations will serve as Civil Defence shelters along the East Coast stretch of TEL.

Construction works for these stations are expected to start by the first quarter of 2016 and are expected to be completed by 2023.

The 13-kilometre East Coast stretch of the 43-kilometre TEL will connect commuters living in the eastern parts of Singapore to the city. The East Coast stretch will have nine stations, including a station which interchanges with the DTL at Sungei Bedok.

The first seven stations from Tanjong Rhu to Bayshore will be ready in 2023, while the remaining two stations will be completed in 2024.
