BUTTERWORTH - A man took his life but not before he slit the throat of his Thai wife after a heated argument over money.

Residents in Taman Mesra Indah, Bagan Lalang were stunned when they stumbled upon the body of Maphooh Rahongohanadom, 34, lying in a pool of blood at the corridor of the apartment at around 4.30pm yesterday.

She had three slash wounds on her neck and leg and two stab wounds on her neck.

Lim Seng Heng, 33, was found dead hanging from the ceiling of the apartment after the police broke in.

They had just moved into the house about a month ago.

North Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Azmi Adam said the couple, who registered their marriage in October last year, had a quarrel after the husband withdrew RM4,000 from the woman's account without her knowledge.

"We believe the husband who was a lorry driver took the money to settle his gambling debts.

"She tried to flee but died at the corridor," he told reporters in the district police headquarters in Kepala Batas.

ACP Azmi said they recovered two knives, believed to be the murder weapons, at the scene.

"The woman's sister witnessed the whole incident and ran out to ask for help.

"She will be the key witness in the case," he said.

The case is investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

The bodies have been sent to the Seberang Jaya Hospital for post mortem today.
