Man, 24, arrested for asking girl, 13, for sex

A 24-year-old man has been arrested for trying to have sex with a 13-year-old girl he met online.

The teen's mother took her to lodge a police report against the unknown man who persistently requested to meet her for sex.

Officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division tracked him down and arrested him on Tuesday at a shopping centre near New Bridge Road.

Initial investigations show that the suspect got to know the victim about a month ago through a social media chat site. He obtained her mobile phone number after gaining her trust and started texting her for sexual services.

The victim's mother chanced upon his lewd messages and immediately took her daughter to lodge the police report.

The suspect is being investigated for offences under the Children and Young Persons Act.

If convicted, he faces a maximum fine of $10,000, and/or five years' jail.
