Man, 35, arrested for at least 28 cases of bicycle theft

SINGAPORE - On Saturday (Nov 8), a 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of involvement in at least 28 cases of bicycle theft.

According to The Straits Times, these cases were reported between Sept 11 and Oct 25.

The suspect was arrested at about 10.20am in New Upper Changi Road during a joint operation conducted by officers from the Public Transport Security Command and Police Land Divisions.

During the arrest, a cutter and a spanner were seized, The Straits Times reported.

According to Channel NewsAsia, the suspect was identified via CCTV footage and ground inquiries.

Investigations are still ongoing.

The police said that a person convicted of theft can be jailed for up to three years, fined, or both.

They also reminded the public to safeguard their bicycles.

The police advised owners to lock their bicycles if they are going to leave them unattended, even for a short while. All removable components should also be secured, reported the Straits Times.

Cyclists should also use a durable lock like a U-lock, which is more secure than cable locks. Alternatively, they can use locks with alarm features.
