Man to be charged for allegedly molesting girl on bus

A 53-year-old man who is believed to be responsible for molesting a girl on a public bus has been arrested.

The police were informed of the incident on 30 July 2013 by the bus company at about 6.30am.

The incident occurred in the vicinity of Punggol Central and the victim was a 12-year-old girl.

Another passenger in the bus became suspicious after he noticed the man taking a seat beside the girl, despite there being other empty seats on the bus.

He alerted the bus driver after the girl started to fidget in her seat.

Both the passenger and the driver detained the man in the bus until the police arrived.

The suspect would be charged in court on 1 August 2013 for an offence of Outrage of Modesty under Section 354(2) of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. The offence carries a jail term up to 5 years, or fine and also be liable to caning, upon conviction.

The police advised the public to stay vigilant at all times and remain calm when they encounter such crimes while travelling on public transport.

They should raise the alarm immediately for other members of public to help, call '999' and inform the bus/train driver immediately to report the matter.
