Man climbs 40m-high crane, arrested for attempted suicide

A construction worker was arrested for attempted suicide at a worksite at Tagore Road, near Upper Thomson, yesterday.

The man, who is in his 40s and understood to be a Chinese national, had climbed up a 40m-high crane at about 9.45am.

He then stood in the centre of the tower crane's arm.

Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) officers deployed safety life air packs beneath the crane during the stand-off.

An eyewitness told Shin Min Daily News that a negotiator used a loudhailer to communicate with the man.

ARRESTED

The man eventually climbed down to safety about half an hour later and was arrested by police.

It is believed that he could have been motivated by reasons relating to his wages.

When The New Paper arrived at the scene yesterday, work at the construction site had resumed.

Mr Jiang Zhi Wei, 36, project manager of the construction site, told TNP that he had received a call at about 10am that one of the workers had climbed up the crane.

He said that he did not know the worker personally as he was "under the charge of the sub-contractor", and did not give a reason for the man's life-threatening attempt.

Police confirmed that they have taken a man into custody for attempted suicide and that investigations are ongoing.
