Man dies after suffering serious burns

JOHOR BARU - The 42-year-old Singaporean who set himself on fire on Saturday has succumbed to his injuries at about 10pm here last night.

The victim was in critical condition and had suffered more than 90 per cent burns to his body.

The Singapore consulate here has been alerted and preparations are being made to repatriate the victim's remains back to the island republic.

He was earlier warded at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital here.

On Saturday morning, the victim had set himself on fire after dousing himself with petrol at Century Gardens here.

Investigations revealed the victim had used a four-litre perrol container to douse himself and set himself alight with a cigarette lighter.

The victim who was ablaze then ran and fell into a drain before passer-bys assisted by calling an ambulance.

The Straits Times identified the man as 42-year-old Mr Stephen Lew Soon Kiang.
