Man investigated for making false police report

SINGAPORE - Police are investigating a 34-year-old man for making a false police report. He claimed that he had been robbed in the vicinity of Mei Ling Street.

On August 5, the man reported to the police that an unknown man armed with a pen-knife had robbed him of his pouch which contained cash amounting to about $350. He said that his pouch also contained some personal documents.

Police officers conducted extensive follow-up investigations into the case. In the course of the investigations, many discrepancies were found. After follow-up interviews by the officers, the man admitted that he had lodged a false report.

Investigations against him are ongoing. Anyone who is convicted of giving any information which he knows to be false to a public servant can be sentenced to a prison term of up to one year, fined up to $5000, or both.

The police warned that they will not hesitate to take stern action against anyone giving false information to the police as these irresponsible actions utilise police resources which could otherwise be put to better use.
