Man jailed 7 years for 2001 stabbing

SINGAPORE - He fatally stabbed a man in 2001 and was on the run for more than 12 years.

But justice was finally served when Eng Bak Siong, 60, was jailed on Monday for seven years.

Eng, who used to run a renovation contracting business, pleaded guilty on Jan 9 to voluntarily causing grievous hurt to painter Peng Teck Hoe, 32.

He had used a knife to stab Mr Peng two to three times in the abdomen at around 4pm on Feb 21, 2001, and the latter died in hospital about eight hours later.

Eng was originally charged with murder on July 18 last year, shortly after the Malaysian police arrested him for immigration offences in Johor Baru earlier that month. He was brought back to Singapore on July 16 last year.

But this capital charge was later reduced following an investigation.

For committing the offence, Eng could have been jailed for life or jailed up to 10 years and fined.

He would be spared caning as he is more than 50 years old.
