Man jailed for assaulting friend

A cleaner who attacked a male friend with a metal chair and beer bottle was jailed for seven months yesterday.

P. Rajenthirun, 50, was given another two years for failing to report for a urine test last year while under drug supervision.

He had been placed under a two-year supervision order in 2011 and had to present himself once a month at a police station for urine tests.

District Judge Liew Thiam Leng backdated his total sentence of two years and seven months to Aug 28 when he was remanded.

Rajenthirun pleaded guilty to using a metal chair and beer bottle to hit the head of Mr Silvendran Saminathan, 50, and two counts of failing to report for urine tests.

A district court heard that Rajenthirun and co-accused Chanderan Mariyappan, 56, had quarrelled with the victim some time before the incident on March 4 this year.

On that day, the victim was in a heated dispute with Rajenthirun at his Marsiling flat when Chanderan punched him on the chest.

Rajenthirun flung a plastic chair towards the victim but missed. The victim ran to hide in the toilet and the duo kept hitting the door until it gave way.

Rajenthirun then entered the toilet and struck the victim's head with a metal stool and a beer bottle. The victim suffered cuts to his head, face and upper back and a bruise on the head.

Chanderan has been sentenced to 10 weeks for causing hurt and committing a rash act.
