Man jailed for sexually abusing girl, 5

After luring his friend's five-year-old daughter away from her Bedok flat on the pretext of needing her help to find a mutual friend's home nearby, Edi Anuar Abdul Aziz led the girl to a secluded place some distance away and forced her to strip.

As rainwater poured over them, he penetrated her private parts with his finger. Edi Anuar, 47, then took the child back to the housing block where she lives and left her alone at the void deck.

She remained there, drenched and in tears, until her mother found her in the afternoon.

Yesterday, Edi Anuar, who is unemployed, was sentenced to 10 years in jail and 12 strokes of the cane for the offence committed last October.

His total punishment included another four years' jail and 12 strokes of the cane for robbery and two drug-related offences.

District Judge Lim Tse Haw said Edi Anuar's actions were "beastly" and "reprehensible". He added: "What you have done to a five-year-old girl is despicable and deserves the strongest condemnation from the court."

The court earlier heard that Edi Anuar, then a kitchen helper, was a family friend of his victim. He knew her and her mother through the girl's father, who was in prison at the time.

At about 11am on Oct 20 last year, he visited their flat and said he needed help in finding a mutual friend's home.

The girl's mother allowed her to leave with him.

After buying the girl a drink at a 7-Eleven convenience store, Edi Anuar led her to Bayshore Road. He then took her to a forested area near the East Coast Parkway and committed the offence.

For the sexual offence against a person less than 14 years old, the penalty is between eight and 20 years' imprisonment and at least 12 strokes of the cane.
