Man slits son’s throat, drinks blood
KOTA KINABALU - A man who claimed to be possessed by spirits slit the throat of his seven-year-old son and drank his blood as family members watched in horror in Kampung Epil, Lahad Datu.
Haikal Salimar was sleeping in the living room of the family house when his 35-year-old father suddenly ran into the kitchen, grabbed a knife and cut his throat.
District police chief Supt Shamsuddin Mat said family members told police it happened very quickly and the boy was already dead before any of them had time to react.
"Among those in the house at the time were Haikal's grandparents and an uncle," Supt Shamsuddin said. "The boy's father had shouted that 'spirits' were disturbing him and wanted him to drink human blood."
Family members shouted for help and with the aid of neighbours wrested the knife from the man, tied him up and called the police.
Police arrested the man at the house, located about 2km from Lahad Datu town.
Supt Shamsuddin said the man had been remanded for seven days under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code to help in investigations for murder.
"A knife believed to be used in the killing was recovered from the scene while the boy's body has been sent to the Lahad Datu hospital for post-mortem," he said.
He said initial investigations showed the man might have practised black magic and believed in superstitious beliefs, adding that he was not found to be under the influence of any substance abuse when he was sent for a medical examination.
Supt Shamsuddin said suspect would also be sent for psychiatric evaluation.
