Man who set ex-girlfriend on fire held, may have been high on drugs

KUALA LUMPUR - The man who allegedly locked up his former girlfriend in her home in Setapak Jaya here and then set fire to the place was arrested in Hutan Melintang, Perak, early yesterday.

He was arrested at a house in Taman Desa Bernam at about 3am.

Acting City CID chief Asst Comm Khairi Ahrasa said the 27-year-old unemployed man was found with a plastic bag containing 2.15gm of marijuana at the time of his arrest.

"The suspect has a previous record of drug possession. He will undergo a drug test to ascertain if he was under the influence of drugs," he said.

ACP Khairi Ahrasa said the suspect had been remanded until Jan 29.

"Initial investigations revealed that the victim, a single mother, was in a six-month relationship with the suspect," he said.

"Witness statements indicate that the two were always fighting. The suspect was always borrowing money from her."

ACP Khairi said the suspect might have gotten angry when she refused to lend him money.

"It might have been the motive behind the act of arson. We are investigating the case under Section 436 of the Penal Code for arson and Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder," he said, adding that all three family members were receiving treatment at Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL).

ACP Khairi said the woman's 62-year-old mother had recovered and was being treated as an outpatient while her baby daughter was badly burnt on the arm.
