SINGAPORE - The Ministry of Defence signed a contract with Thyssenkrupp Marine System GmBH on Friday to acquire two new Type 218SG submarines. The subs are expected to be delivered from 2020.
The two new submarines and the navy's two Archer-class submarines will replace four ageing Challenger-class submarines. The Challenger- class submarines were built in the 1960s and will be retired from service progressively.
