Ministers visit Marine Crescent Ville community garden as part of upcoming World Food Day

As part of Singapore's observance of World Food Day 2014 that happens on Oct 16, Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, Member of Parliament for Marine Parade GRC, and Dr Mohamad Maliki Bin Osman, Minister of State for National Development and Defence and Mayor, South East District visited the Marine Crescent Ville community garden at Blk 34 Marine Crescent.

Mr Goh and Dr Maliki harvested and sampled produce from the garden including a variety of vegetables and fruits.

Addressing residents, Dr Maliki observed that "Community farms help us appreciate the effort needed to grow food, its preciousness, and hence the importance of not wasting it. The food that you have grown here helps to feed not only family, but friends and the wider community."

Dr Maliki applauded residents' donation of the garden's produce to the Foo Hai Elderly Lodge, a Voluntary Welfare Organisation based in the neighbourhood.

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) marks World Food Day on Oct 16 every year, the day the organisation was founded in 1945. This year's theme is Family Farming: Feeding the world, caring for the earth.
