SINGAPORE - The Ministry of Education (MOE) has announced that the school year for 2014 for all MOE primary and secondary schools will start on Jan 2 and end on Nov 14.
During the school year, there will be 40 weeks of curriculum time for teaching and learning before the start of national examinations, and six weeks of school holidays for teachers and students at the end of the year.
For junior colleges and Millenia Institute (MI), the school year will start on Feb 6. In a statement to the media, MOE said this is due to the GCE 'O' Level results being released in mid-January.
There will be four vacation periods for schools, junior colleges and MI throughout the year.
Scheduled school holidays in 2014 will encompass Youth Day (Jul 6) and Teachers' Day (Sep 5). As Youth Day falls on a Sunday, the following Monday (Jul 7) will be a scheduled school holiday.
Children's Day which is for primary level students will be on Oct 3 (Friday).
MOE also released the tentative public holidays schedule for the next year.
Chinese New Year is on Jan 31 to Feb 1, 2014, which is a Friday to Saturday; as such, the following Monday (Feb 3) will be a scheduled holiday.
As Hari Raya Haji falls on Oct 5, 2014, which is a Sunday, Monday (Oct 6) will also be a public holiday.
Tentatively, Deepavali will fall on Oct 23, 2014. However, this date will be reconfirmed against the Hindu Almanac when it is available. The Ministry of Manpower will release a statement should there be any changes any changes in the public holiday dates.
