More drug users arrested in first half of year

SINGAPORE - The Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) arrested 1,790 drug abusers and seized $9.4 million worth of drugs in the first half of this year.

The number of drug users arrested is an increase of 3 per cent from the same period last year.

Heroin and methamphetamine were the most commonly abused drugs, with 92 per cent of all drug abusers arrested being heroin or methamphetamine abusers.

Cannabis was the third most commonly abused drug, and the number of new cannabis abusers arrested increased by 34 per cent, from 38 in the first half of 2012 to 51 in the same period in 2013.

Officers seized about 36kg and 22.5kg of heroin and methamphetamine respectively. Of the 22.5kg of 'Ice' seized, about 17.7kg or 79 per cent was not intended for the local market.

CNB said in a statement that upstream efforts played a pivital role in preventing drug use.
