More RWS scholarships for ITE students

MORE Institute of Technical Education (ITE) students will benefit from scholarships offered by Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) to fund studies in courses such as engineering and hospitality.

The ITE and RWS signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) yesterday which will see RWS fund 20 second-year ITE students through RWS Skills Scholarships, each worth over $4,000.

This is the second tie-up between ITE and RWS. The first, in 2010, saw RWS sponsor 12 ITE College West students over five years. Those scholarships, worth $1,000 a year, extended only to hospitality and tourism courses at ITE College West.

With the new MOU, students from all ITE Colleges are eligible to apply for a wider range of courses. More than 300 became interns at RWS under the first MOU.

RWS chief operating officer David Sisk said: "It has been fruitful for us. It's an investment we make in Singapore and the students. We get quality workers out of it."

Scholarship holders will undertake an enhanced six-month internship, up from the usual three months. Upon graduation, they will embark on a career with RWS.

Speaking at the signing, former ITE student Muhammad Irdwan Abdul Rahman, 26, said: "I would like to thank RWS for giving me a lot of opportunities and ITE for believing in me."

Initially a part-timer in 2009, Mr Irdwan took up an ITE course in hospitality, and was promoted to area manager at RWS.
