Boy's fall: Mum charged with murder

By Elena Chong, The Straits Times Thursday, Jun 4, 2013

An unemployed woman was charged on Monday with the murder of her nine-year-old son, who fell to his death from their fifth-floor flat last Saturday.

Rebecca Loh Chui Lai, 31, is alleged to have committed the offence at her three-room West Coast Road home at Block 704 between 6.08pm and 7.03pm.

She displayed no emotion when the charge was read to her in a district court.

The short-haired, bespectacled woman was clad in a red polo shirt and blue bermudas.

Her son Gabriel Loh Zhen Jie was found unconscious at the foot of the block below the kitchen window.

He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The boy lived with his mother and grandmother and would sit in a baby stroller whenever he went out. Earlier, Chinese evening newspaper reports described him as appearing "thin and sickly" as a result of a failed liver operation.

The prosecution applied for Loh to be remanded for psychiatric assessment.

Loh, who was not represented, will be back in court on June 24.

If convicted of murder, she faces the death penalty.
