Mum jailed for selling baby

A mother was jailed two-and-a-half years for selling her nine-day-old baby in Zhejiang province, China, China Press reported.

The sentence was passed on March 7 after the court took into consideration the two babies under the accused's care.

The woman had sold the baby with her husband as they were worried that they would be fined for having more than one child, an offence then under the country's one-child policy. Also, the family depended only on the husband's monthly income of RMB 2,700 (S$541), the paper said.

The husband was sentenced to five years' jail on Dec 30. The baby was sold to a buyer for RMB40,000 in October 2012.

Their friend reported the case to the police who then detained the couple.
