JOHOR BARU - An Indonesian man nicknamed Cendol is on the run from the police after he allegedly murdered his fellow countryman in a bid to win over a woman.

Iskandar Puteri OCPD Supt Noor Hashim Mohamad said Cendol got into a feud with construction worker Miswandi, 35, over an Indonesian woman in her 20s.

On Monday night, Miswandi went to the suspect's rented house in Taman Sri Pulai here to "thrash things out" between them.

"However, their discussion turned heated and things got physical between them," Supt Noor Hashim told a press conference here yesterday.

He added that Cendol's Indonesian housemates too got involved in the scuffle, which led to a brawl.

The victim then tried to escape from his attackers but fell into a drain. He then picked himself up before dropping dead in front of a house owned by a Malaysian family just 100m away from where he was first assaulted.

The police were notified of the incident at about 9pm.

"Policemen found the victim with stab wounds on his head, right rib, right knee and his back," said Supt Noor Hashim.

Police also seized a hoe that was believed to have been used in the attack.

Six suspects aged between 25 and 36 were picked up several hours later, though Cendol managed to escape.

"We are sure that he is still here," said Supt Noor Hashim.

He added that the victim's body had been sent to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital for a post-mortem and the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

Those with information about Cendol are urged to contact the state police hotline at 07-2212 999.
