Musical treat for volunteers, beneficiaries

More than 400 youth beneficiaries and volunteers of the Community Chest were last night treated to a performance of Singapura: The Musical, about the 10 years leading up to the Republic's independence in 1965.
They watched the show at the newly restored Capitol Theatre at a charity night hosted by property firm Perennial Real Estate Holdings as part of its celebrations for Singapore's 50th birthday.
The beneficiaries and volunteers were part of nearly 1,000 people in the audience yesterday.
Perennial raised $200,000 for more than 80 charities under Community Chest, and this will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Government under the Care & Share Movement for SG50.
The US$2 million (S$2.7 million) musical follows the story of a bus driver who wants to leave Singapore, but whose daughter hopes to stay and strive for a better life. It will be showing until June 28.
