Musicians in sync with Sing50

A rousing medley of popular local songs performed by 50 pianists, more than 90 musicians and a rhythm band filled the air at Tanglin Trust School yesterday.

The musicians were rehearsing the finale piece for an Aug 7 concert called Sing50 - a celebration of 50 years of Singapore music co-organised by The Straits Times and The Business Times. The finale is being arranged by music director and composer Indra Ismail.

The concert at the National Stadium will also feature local artists such as Stefanie Sun, JJ Lin, Tracy Huang, Dick Lee, Jeremy Monteiro and Rahimah Rahim performing in many languages and music genres.

One of the performers, harpist Jana Ang Fries, 38, said rehearsals have gone well so far.

"We are excited to play for the crowds and for the music to fill the the National Stadium," she said.

"I believe it is also the first time 50 pianists will be playing together alongside a band, orchestra and singers. This means that good music will be created and that everyone will have a great time."

The public can obtain concert tickets by making a donation to the Mapletree-Sing50 online charity ticket drive, which is being organised by presenting sponsor Mapletree Investments.

A minimum donation of $20 is required per ticket.

They can be purchased at www.sportshubtix.sg. All proceeds will go to The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund and The Business Times Budding Artists Fund. Mapletree Investments, Resorts World Sentosa and Zurich Insurance are the concert's main sponsors.

The Sing50 concert is being produced by The Rice Company, with the Steinway Gallery Singapore as its piano partner.
