Not necessarily defaulters

Foreign students who study in a polytechnic or university on a Ministry of Education grant are required to work in a Singapore-based company for three years after they graduate.

Education Minister Heng Swee Keat said eight in 10 of them either start work immediately, or have applied to the ministry to start serving their bond later.

But this does not mean the remaining 20 per cent are bond defaulters, he said in his reply to Mr Png Eng Huat (Hougang).

Some went overseas for further studies but did not seek deferment approval, some are in the midst of seeking deferment approval, while others are still looking for a job.
