NTU launches 9 new undergrad programmes in business, engineering

SINGAPORE - Nine new undergraduate degree programmes in business, engineering and science will be available in Nanyang Technological University (NTU).

According to a press statement by NTU, the new programmes at Nanyang Business School, College of Engineering and College of Science will start when the new academic year in August begins.

Among the nine are two new business programmes which include a minor in strategic communication. Those aiming for engineering or science can also look forward to five more new engineering and science programmes with second majors in emerging industries such as pharmaceutical engineering, food science technology, medical biology, and biomedical materials, according to NTU.

With these nine new programmes, NTU will offer 103 undergraduate degree programmes in total for the new academic year 2016/2017.

The new programmes will allow students to "develop interdisciplinary competence and are aimed at increasing their career opportunities and to meet industry demand", according to NTU.

For the two new degrees offered by the Nanyang Business School, students will be able to graduate with a Bachelor in Business or Bachelor in Accountancy, along with a Master of Science in Financial Engineering (MFE) in four years.

The two integrated programmes include key concepts and techniques in finance, computer science and mathematics and students can expect to learn how to apply sophisticated engineering tools to solve real-life financial problems.

The one-year MFE programme includes a seven-week study exchange at the prestigious Carnegie Mellon University in the United States, where students will get to interact with business and industry experts in finance, computing, and mathematics.

Prof Ravi Kumar, Dean of Nanyang Business School, said: "These new programmes allow our students to apply the business skills they have picked up in the classroom, to solve actual problems that companies and organisations face every day."

NTU will also launch five new interdisciplinary science and engineering programmes with second majors.

The Bachelor of Engineering in Materials Engineering with Second Major in Medical Biology and the Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences with Second Major in Biomedical Materials will equip students with the skills to tackle emerging healthcare developments such as regenerative medicine.

According to NTU, students taking the Bachelor of Engineering in Bioengineering or the Bachelor of Engineering in Materials Engineering course will be able to take up a Second Major in Pharmaceutical Engineering.

Students in these two programmes will get opportunities to work with biopharmaceutical companies to get a first-hand experience in drug design and development.

According to NTU, all new programmes are direct honours unless specified to include a master's degree.
