SINGAPORE - The National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) have raised more than $200 million for educational initiatives to mark the 90th birthday of former prime minister Lee Kuan Yew.

The money will be used to enhance academic excellence and provide scholarships and bursaries for students at the two universities.

A donor appreciation dinner on Tuesday was attended by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong and Education Minister Heng Swee Keat, as well as more than 100 donors and guests.

Both universities raised about $100 million each.

The gifts will be a boost for academic programmes at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, NUS University Town, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and Yale-NUS College.

NUS has established the Lee Kuan Yew Endowed Fund to provide bursaries for needy students.

SUTD is establishing a Lee Kuan Yew Fund for scholarships, study awards and bursaries, to attract and nurture technically-grounded leaders and innovators who will improve lives in Singapore.
