Old dragon kilns in S'pore given longer lease of life

SINGAPORE - Two remaining dragon kilns in Singapore have been given an extension of tenure to continue operations.

Thow Kwang Industry Pte Ltd and Focus Ceramic Services can operate their businesses till December 2014 and January 2015 respectively.

National Heritage Board (NHB), which assessed the heritage value of the two kilns, championed the extension of their tenure.

Mr Alvin Tan, Group Director (Policy) of NHB, said dragon kiln pottery is a unique part of Singapore's pottery history.

He added that the kilns are also of artistic value as they are presently used by local artists. The unique glaze used in their works could only be achieved through traditional wood-firing at the kilns

In view of NHB's strong support, the Singapore Land Authority will allow the two kilns to continue operations on site.
