Pair arrested for suspected involvement in loansharking activities

SINGAPORE - A 35-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman have been arrested for their suspected involvement in loansharking activities.

The police received a report on Dec 5 that a unit at Sembawang Drive was splashed with paint and had graffiti scrawled on the wall. After police investigations, the suspects were arrested at East Coast Park on Dec 8, according to a press statement by the police.

Preliminary investigations reveal that the pair are believed to have committed similar loanshark harassment acts in Ang Mo Kio, Woodlands and Bukit Panjang. Items such as bicycle locks and markers were found in their possession and seized as case exhibits.

Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined a minimum sum of $5,000 and maximum sum of $50,000. They also face a mandatory jail term of up to five years and six strokes of the cane.
