PAP's Tin Pei Ling will contest in MacPherson SMC for coming GE

SINGAPORE - The People's Action Party (PAP) has officially announced on Friday that Marine Parade Group Representation Constituency (GRC) Member of Parliament (MP) Tin Pei Ling will be contesting MacPherson Single Member Constituency (SMC) in the coming General Election (GE).

According to Channel NewsAsia, the announcement was made at a PAP Community Foundation Education Centre in MacPherson.

Ms Tin, 31, gave birth to a baby boy on Aug 5 this year. Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong paid a visit to Ms Tin in hospital.

Besides congratulating the couple on their newborn, he previously posted on Facebook that Ms Tin will be fielded in MacPherson SMC for the coming GE.

He wrote: "Lest she is anxious, I passed the message from the Party that she will be fielded in MacPherson in coming GE. I advised her to rest and not worry about the date of the GE. She will not be there at the ND Parade but there will be time for her to turn up at Nomination, and campaign thereafter."

Ms Tin was first elected during the 2011 GE as MP for the MacPherson division under the Marine Parade GRC. On the topic of motherhood, Channel NewsAsia reported that Ms Tin was "very excited" to be a mother.

"To all the working mothers out there - kudos to all of you. I have deep respect. I know it's not easy now. I'm a mother as well, and I hope the men out there will continue to give utmost support to working moms," she said at the official announcement on Friday.

In a video of Ms Tin released on PAP's Facebook page, Ms Tin said: "I have also been focusing on elderly issues and I will continue to do so. I will make sure that our elders are able to tap on a network of elder support so that within the community they are cared for, supported for."

She also expressed her concerns about Singapore's education system and whether there will be enough pathways "to cater to the very diverse interests" and sufficient job opportunities in the video.
