Passion in lift, then stabbing pain

SINGAPORE - Emerging from a passionate clinch with his former girlfriend, a man pulled out a knife and proceeded to slice off one of her thumbs and stab her in the lungs.

Muhammad Idham Johari, 28, was yesterday sentenced to eight years in prison and 12 strokes of the cane.

According to Chinese newspapers Lianhe Wanbao and Shin Min Daily News, 26-year-old Siti Noor Hidayah was on her way home one night in July when she met the man.

Ms Siti was riding the lift to the ninth floor of her Bukit Panjang housing block when it stopped on the eighth floor.

Idham, who was waiting for her on that level, jumped in and immediately started kissing her.

The pair got off on the 10th floor, where they continued their passionate embrace until Ms Siti - who is married - said they needed to stop.

He immediately whipped out a kitchen knife and stabbed her in the chest twice, and sliced off her right thumb. He fled and threw the knife in a rubbish bin at a nearby block.

Ms Siti managed to get help. Her sister called the police.

Ms Siti was hospitalised for a week to repair her lungs and to get her right thumb re-attached.

That thumb is now 1cm shorter than the other.
