Pieces of history

Pieces of history... these brass shells may not look like anything special. But retired major Ishwar Lall-Singh (right), 85, is holding pieces of the nation's history - they are actually cartridges from the rounds fired at a 21-gun salute during Singapore's first National Day Parade (NDP) in 1966.

For almost 50 years, he kept the shells in his home. On May 5, they were passed to the National Heritage Board for safekeeping. The mementos will be on show next year at an exhibition on the first NDP.
