PM Lee opens Fusionopolis Two, Singapore's latest R&D hub

The latest addition to one-north, Fusionopolis Two, was officially opened by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Monday, Oct 19.

Boasting state-of-the-art facilities, Singapore's newest research & development (R&D) center is a $450 million hub that provides co-location opportunities for research, innovation and enterprise aimed at igniting interdisciplinary collaborations amongst the public and private sector players.

Formed and developed by JTC, the opening of Fusionopolis Two comes against the backdrop of the highest Gross Domestic Expenditure in R&D (GERD) recorded, at S$7.6 billion in 2013.

Anchored at Fusionopolis Two are the following Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) science and engineering research institutes: the Data Storage Institute (DSI), Institute of Microelectronics (IME), Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE), and the Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech).

CEO of JTC Mr Png Cheong Boon said: "We welcome A*STAR's science and engineering research institutes at Fusionopolis Two. The anchoring of these new clusters further enhances the value proposition of one-north, as a bedrock of innovation."

A*STAR's industry partner Applied Materials is slated to set up a second joint lab with A*STAR at Fusionopolis Two.

Chairman of A*STAR Mr Lim Chuan Poh said: "SG50 reminds us that we are where we are today because of our people and the collective will to want to progress and improve our lives. When we can work well together, there are really no problems that we cannot solve and no challenges that we cannot overcome."

He added that by working with the community in terms of research to a greater extent, Singapore's Smart Nation vision will be realised and there will be much to be celebrated come SG100.

Mr Lim's statement is in line with the Government's commitment to transform Singapore into a knowledge-based, innovation-driven economy, where both public and private sectors can work closely to create impactful economic and societal outcomes for the nation.

Over the last 15 years, one-north has grown in stature as an icon of Singapore's knowledge economy. Today, it is home to some 250 leading companies and global institutions, five institutes of higher learning and corporate universities, 41 incubators with over 600 start-ups, 16 world-class public research institutes, and over 35,000 talent.
