Police advisory for Hari Raya celebrations

SINGAPORE - The police have issued an advisory for those going to the Hari Raya Bazaar at Geylang Serai, which starts June 17 till July 16, 2015. A large crowd is expected to be there, especially during the weekends.

According to the statement on Monday, police highlighted ways to prevent theft and precautions to take to guard against potential molestors:

To prevent theft:

- Never leave your handbag, wallet or mobile phone unattended in public places such as on a table at eateries or in a shopping trolley;

- Do not be distracted by strangers creating a commotion or accidentally bumping/spilling something onto you;

- Avoid carrying large amounts of cash with you;

- Do not adorn your children with excessive gold jewellery as they are easy targets for potential criminals; and

- Avoid placing your wallet in your back pocket and always remember to sling your handbag in front of you and ensure that it is fastened or zipped at all times.

For female visitors, be vigilant against potential molestors:

- Be alert to your surroundings. When possible, move away if someone stands or sits exceptionally close to you;

- If you suspect that you are being followed, remain calm and proceed to the nearest open business premise, crowded area or call the Police to seek help

- Stay close to your friends or move around in groups when in crowded places; and

- If you are molested, call for help immediately by shouting or seek help from people nearby to increase the chances of apprehending the culprit. Call 999 as soon as possible.

In addition, heavy vehicular traffic is also expected along Changi Road and Sims Ave. Motorists are advised to avoid the affected roads, make alternative travel arrangements and drive with caution.

Auxiliary police officers will be deployed at all affected road junctions to regulate traffic and assist motorists. The police added that strict enforcement action will also be taken against illegal parking.
