Police arrest 2 teens for robbing 78-year-old wheelchair-bound man

Police have arrested two youths aged 15 and 16 years old for suspected involvement in a case of robbery with hurt.

According to a statement from the police, they received a call today (Jan 8) at 8.50am, stating that a 78-year-old wheelchair bound man was robbed by two unknown men along North Bridge Road yesterday at 7pm.

During the robbery, the duo assaulted the victim and robbed him of $500.

Three officers from the Central Police Division responded to the scene upon receiving the report. Through extensive ground enquiries and CCTV footages obtained, the officers managed to establish the identity of the suspects.

The suspects were arrested along Jalan Sultan and will be charged tomorrow for an offence of Robbery with Hurt under Section 394 of the Penal Code Chapter 224, which carries a maximum of 20 years' imprisonment and shall be liable for caning not less than 12 strokes.

A remand order will be sought to remand the 16-year-old suspect at Central Police Division and the 15-year-old at the Singapore Boys' Home for further investigation.

Commander of Central Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police (DAC) Daniel Tan advised the public not to be alarmed when confronted by strangers, but to remain calm, observe the description of the culprits and to call the police at the earliest opportunity.

He added that the police will not hesitate to press for deterrence sentence against the culprits especially confrontational crimes committed against elderly.
