Police arrest man suspected of breaking into and stealing from mosques

Police have arrested a 41-year-old man for involvement in five cases of housebreaking and theft reported at mosques.

The police said they received a report that the donation box of a mosque in Victoria Street was forced open and donations stolen on May 17. Four more similar cases were reported from May to July at other mosques.

Police said in a statement today that the suspect would break into mosques after closing hours and force open donation boxes.

They said that it was a challenge to establish the identity of the suspect, even though they had images of the suspect from closed-circuit television cameras.

However, officers on the lookout spotted the suspect on Wednesday in eylang Serai and arrested him.

The suspect will be charged in court tomorrow. If convicted, the man can be jailed up to 14 years, the police said.
