Police warn against Indonesian election campaigning

The police have warned foreigners in Singapore against campaigning for July's Indonesian elections.

In a statement on Thursday, the police said that they had "received information" that there may be foreign nationals here doing just that.

"While foreign nationals are allowed to work or live here, they have to abide by our laws. They should not import issues from their own countries into Singapore which can disturb public order, as there can be groups with opposing views," said the police.

PRINCIPLE

This is a long-standing principle which has helped maintain harmony and public order here, as well as good relations with other countries, the police added.

"The authorities will act firmly, and those who break the law will face action which could include termination of their visa or work passes."

Last year, a group of Malaysians protested at the Merlion Park after the Malaysian elections in May. The police took action against 55 people involved in the protest.
