Pongal celebration at Bukit Panjang

THE residents of Bukit Panjang had a fun-filled Pongal celebration on Jan 19.

Organised for the seventh consecutive year by the Bukit Panjang new residents integration committee and supported by People’s Association, the celebration was held at an open space opposite Block 229, along with a blood donation drive which saw about 80 residents donate blood.

Mayor for north-west district and Member of Parliament for Bukit Panjang Dr Teo Ho Pin (above, with garland) was the guest of honour and he wore traditional south Indian attire.

The sweet dish, pongal, which is the highlight of the festival, was made in two 1.2m-tall pots imported from Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu.

Attended by about 2,300 Singapore citizens, permanent residents, new residents and foreigners, the event showcased traditional Tamil folk songs and dance performances, as well as Malay and Chinese dances and songs, reported Tamil Murasu.

As part of the vibrant celebration, a competition on traditional south Indian games was organised for secondary school students.
