Power fault caused 2-hour train service disruption on Wed morning: LTA

SINGAPORE - The train service disruption between Yishun and Bishan stations on the North-South Line on Wednesday morning was due to a power fault, according to the Land Transport Authority (LTA).

LTA said in a statement that a power breaker located at Ang Mo Kio MRT station was damaged and the exact cause of the incident is still under investigation.

Earlier this morning, train operator SMRT first announced news of the disruption on their Twitter account at 5.54am. It said that free bus services had been activated. Subsequent tweets added that shuttle buses were also made available between Yishun and Marina South Pier stations.

At 6.57am, train service was still down. Full train service only resumed in both directions at 8.10am. At 9am, about 50 trains were running at a frequency of two to three minutes, according to LTA.

Several people caught in the disruption took to social media to air their complaints. The Straits Times reported that one Instagram user @djdixon posted a photo of a large crowd gathered outside Yishun station and wrote that "hundreds of people" were waiting anxiously for taxis and buses.

Those affected by the disruption also included students sitting for the GCE A-level exams this morning. According to LTA, the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board said that they will not penalise students for being late and students will be allowed the full duration of the examination.
