President’s ‘light touch’ sets scene

SINGAPORE - The streets of Chinatown came to life on Jan 11 as stilt walkers and other performers entertained the crowds before the Chinatown Chinese New Year Light-Up and Opening Ceremony at New Bridge Road.

Officiating at this year's event was President Tony Tan Keng Yam, who at the flip of a switch on the night of Jan 11 turned the streets around the area into shades of red and gold to usher in the Year of the Horse.

Flanked by 176 horse-shaped lanterns, the production stretches some 880m within Chinatown and took 55 master craftsmen from China 15,000 man hours to put together.

The horse lanterns are set among 2,000 giant ancient coins, representing this year's festival theme, Galloping to Prosperity.
