President Tan meets China president Xi Jinping, Singapore youth athletes in Nanjing

NANJING - Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday congratulated Singapore on its 49th National Day, noting the strides the country has made since its independence in 1965, in a bilateral meeting with President Tony Tan Keng Yam here.

President Tony Tan Keng Yam is in Nanjing, China, for the 2nd Youth Olympic Games at the invitation of President Xi Jinping. In addition to representing Singapore at the Youth Olympic Games Opening Ceremony, President Tan had a bilateral meeting with President Xi and attended a Welcome Dinner hosted by President Xi for foreign dignitaries today.

President Tan also visited and had lunch with athletes from Team Singapore at the Games Village.

During the meeting with President Xi, President Tan congratulated China on the excellent arrangements for the 2nd Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing.

President Xi thanked Singapore for its support as the host of the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in 2010.

Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the substantive and multi-faceted bilateral cooperation, which has progressed with the times. Both leaders also expressed confidence that bilateral cooperation would continue to broaden and deepen, particularly in areas like financial services, science and technology, education and research, a possible new Government-to-Government project in China's Western Region and the exchange of experiences in social governance systems.

President Tan and President Xi agreed to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Singapore-China diplomatic relations in 2015 with an exchange of State Visits.
