President's Challenge gets $100k

SINGAPORE - The Muslim community here has contributed about $100,000 for the President's Challenge.

The annual campaign, started in 2000, raises funds for charity in the President's name.

The money was collected through events such as a one- day donation drive in all mosques, and an annual charity briyani lunch, in its 13th year. President Tony Tan Keng Yam attended this year's lunch on June 7 at Khalid Mosque in Joo Chiat.

The Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) presented a cheque to Dr Tan yesterday.

It also gave its Jasa Cemerlang or Distinguished Service Award to Mr Haider Mohamedally Sithawalla, 81, the chairman of Warees Investments' board of directors. Warees Investments is the property arm of Muis. Eight other outstanding Muslims received the Jasa Bakti or Long Service Award.

This is the 37th year that the Muis Awards have been handed out.
