Pure Fitness gym to close for Apple store

Members of a popular gym chain in Singapore were told yesterday that one of its gyms will close in seven weeks' time.

In two e-mail messages sent out to its patrons and fitness groups, the management of Pure Fitness said its gym at Knightsbridge in Orchard will close on Dec 15 as part of a reorganisation plan for the site.

The gym, together with other tenants in the building, is handing back the space to the landlord to make way for Singapore's first Apple store next year.

"We understand that this is short notice, but we have only recently been informed of the handover date on this site," one e-mail message said.

It added that more classes will be added to two facilities at Ngee Ann City and Asia Square. The chain is also looking for a larger space on Orchard Road.

The management said it is opening a new yoga studio in the Central Business District in the second quarter of next year, and is "hoping to finalise terms on another gym location to open in late 2016 as well".

Other tenants in Knightsbridge include CIMB Bank and fashion retail stores Tommy Hilfiger, Topshop/Topman, Abercrombie & Fitch and Brooks Brothers.

When contacted, Nurul Huda, a customer service officer at Pure Fitness' Knightsbridge outlet, confirmed the gym's impending closure and said it will "definitely compensate" customers on a case-by-case basis.
