KOTA BARU - Police have arrested a man in connection with the death of a female religious teacher whose body was found on the bank of Sungai Pergau in Jeli on Thursday.

Kelantan State CID chief Asst Comm Ahmad Taufek Abdullah said the 52-year-old suspect from Kg. Dendong, was a relative of the woman. He was arrested a day after the victim was found dead.

"We arrested the suspect, who also lives in the same village at 7.30pm on Friday.

"Police are still trying to ascertain the motive for the murder and have obtained a seven-day remand order to facilitate the investigation," he told reporters yesterday at the state police headquarters.

ACP Ahmad Taufek said that no valuables were missing from the victim's house and there was no sign of any struggle.

He said the murder came to light after the victim's brother went to her house and discovered the lights switched on.

"He filed a missing person's report and his sister's body was found with wounds on her left hand near the river about a kilometre from her home. A post mortem report revealed that the victim died of massive blood loss.

"Police are looking for the murder weapon," the ACP said.
