Rewards for doing good

Cleaner Chen Mei Jiao was ready to make her way to work after slotting a $2 note into a donation box at Raffles Place MRT Station.

But she was stopped by staff members from welfare organisation Lions Befrienders and given a bundle of freebies.

These included a complimentary copy of The New Paper and sachets of OWL brand coffee, Nutrifield Soy Cereal and an OWL Cafe voucher.

The charity drive Madam Chen, 57, donated to last Thursday was a partnership between TNP and OWL.

Proceeds will go to Lions Befrienders, the beneficiary of TNP's charity project, Helping Hands.

Lions Befrienders is an organisation that helps the needy and vulnerable elderly.

Members of the public were encouraged to contribute any amount into the donation box before collecting their OWL freebies.

Pleasantly surprised by the number of items, Madam Chen added that she was excited to try the coffee and cereal, as she had never had them before.

"I was not expecting to receive so many free items. I usually donate whenever I come across such drives, as we should always help the underprivileged if we have the means," she said in Mandarin.

HEARTWARMING

Admin clerk Sarah Lee, 28, said: "It's heartwarming to see people slow down and donate money although they are rushing during lunch hour."

OWL's general marketing manager Sherie Koh said: "We have been well-supported by the public during the past three years of partnership with TNP, and this year hasn't been any different.

"The turnout was very good, and it's nice to see both young and old coming together to support the needy elderly."

There will be another round of giveaways tomorrow at the Tampines Bus Interchange and Maxwell Food Centre, starting at noon.

One lucky person will stand a chance to win 58 years' supply of OWL Coffee and 58 delicious meals at OWL Cafe, in celebration of OWL's 58th anniversary.
