PETALING JAYA - A man wanted for robbery was shot in the shoulder when he attempted to ram a stolen car into a police vehicle while trying to escape arrest.
Police were hot on the heels of the man, who was part of a duo that robbed a two-storey terrace house in Bandar Kinrara, Puchong, at 7.45am on Thursday, when the incident occurred, said Serdang OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Razak Elias.
"The two men, in their 20s, had earlier broke into the master bedroom and ordered a sleeping 46-year-old woman to wake up.
"She was home alone as her husband was at work and her child was at school," he said.
ACP Abdul Razak said the men threatened the woman with a knife before proceeding to ransack her belongings.
The men stole a handphone, money, jewellery and branded handbags from the room before taking off in a Volkswagen Beetle parked in the house compound. The loot amounted to more than RM200,000 (S$77,000).
ACP Abdul Razak said a neighbour saw the suspects park a Mercedes-Benz with tinted windows in front of the victim's house, but was not aware who the occupants were.
"We watched the neighbour's closed circuit television recording to identify the suspects," he said, adding that a search team then swung into action immediately.
"Our counterparts spotted the suspects at Vista Komanwel C, Bukit Jalil. They were driving separate cars.
"When asked to surrender, the man driving the Volkswagen Beetle tried to ram into the police car," he said.
ACP Abdul Razak said police opened fire at the vehicle. "Two shots were fired, and one of the bullets hit the suspect on his right shoulder," he said. The vehicle skidded and crashed into a car parked nearby.
ACP Abdul Razak said the other suspect, who was driving the Mercedes-Benz - reported stolen in Taman Tun Dr Ismail earlier - surrendered after the shooting.
"The injured man was taken to Hospital Serdang for treatment and is in stable condition."
The case has been classified as attempted murder under Section 307 of the Penal Code.
